The global Volcanic Alert Level Information Database (VALID) includes 92 Volcanic Alert Level (VAL) Systems from 32 countries, issued by 45 agencies.

Overview

In order to understand, track, and contextualize alert level changes at volcanoes around the world, we built the global Volcanic Alert Level Information Database (VALID). The database contains information about 92 VAL systems from 32 countries. VAL systems differ in a number of ways, most notably by the way levels are named, the domain that they apply to, and the number of levels in the system.

The database and website have some important limitations:

  • VAL systems found on this website should not be used for emergency purposes. For the most recent, official, VAL system and current VAL for a particular volcano, please seek out the proper institutional authorities on the matter.

  • Inclusion in the database is not a reflection of VAL system quality and does not constitute an endorsement. VAL systems from a wide variety of sources are included. Old and outdated VAL system are included to show the evolution of VAL system design and development through time.

  • Exclusion from the database does not indicate any value judgements about the VAL systems, rather oversight on our part. Please contact us to suggest additions.

  • The database was populated by examining each VAL system in detail and recording VAL system metadata. Some VAL system metadata was not always readily apparent. As such, there may be errors in some VAL system metadata fields. Please contact us to suggest corrections.
